Early Life
Enzo Jeremías Fernández was born on January 17, 2001, in San Martin, Argentina to the parents of Raul, his dad, who was a painter, and Martha, his mom, who
was a cleaner. His parents and older siblings also worked other low-paying jobs to get by.
He was named after three-time Copa America winner Enzo Francescoli, for his father’s admiration of the Uruguayan footballer.
Career
Enzo Fernández began his football career at the youth level with Club La Recova before he moved to River plate in 2006. He was promoted to the first team and made his debut on March 4, 2020, when he came on as a substitute for Santiago Sosa in the 75th minute in a 3-0 loss to L.D.U.
He went on loan to Defensa y Justicia in 2020 and returned to River plate on July 15, 2021, after an impressive outing. He scored his first goal for the club in a 2-0 victory against Vélez Sarsfield on August 14.
He signed for Benfica for a reported transfer fee of €10 million plus €8 million in add-ons, on June 23, 2022. He made his debut for the club in a 4-0 home win against Midtjylland.
Fernández represented Argentina at the under-18 level before he was called up to the senior team by the manager Lionel Scaloni ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.
He made his debut on September 24, 2022, in a 3-0 win against Honduras after coming on to replace Leandro Paredes in the 64th minute.
He scored Argentina’s second goal in a 2-0 win against Mexico at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. He was given the youngest best player at FIFA World Cup in Qatar due to his performance over Argentina’s victory of winning the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Chelsea purchased Fernández for a package worth £106.8 million after a final agreement was reached on 31 January 2023, between the two clubs. He signed an eight-and-a-half-year contract, valid until 2031.
